Job Description

Job Title: Controls and Instrumentation (C&I) Engineer – Submarines

Full Time

Working Location: Raynesway, Derby

We are looking for a Controls and Instrumentation (C&I) Engineer to join the Rolls-Royce Submarines Business.  This engineering role is an important part of a once in a lifetime major infrastructure programme replacing the current facilities on a Nuclear Licensed Site with modern state-of-the-art manufacturing capabilities.  This opportunity is ideal for someone who wants to ensure that the C&I aspects of our new high-hazard facilities are designed and implemented to a suitably high-standard.

Our Submarines Business is responsible for the design, manufacture, supply and through-life support of nuclear propulsion-related products and systems for the Royal Navy's submarine fleet.  We support the Royal Navy as the Technical Authority for all UK Naval Reactor Submarine Plants, and we're continuing to build our nuclear sector capability to support the development of a new nuclear plant for future submarines.

For you, this means unique opportunities to shape the future of the Submarines Business.

The purpose of this role is to support the entirety of the bespoke C&I facility design from requirements capture and initial concept development through to commissioning and handover to operations.  This will require the ability to ensure that designs are safe and conform to relevant UK legislation as well as liaising with both internal/external supply chains and design partners as an intelligent customer.

This the role will involve working with both internal personnel and those in the supply chain. This includes our design partner who will be undertaking the detailed design at the component/programming level.

Why Rolls-Royce:

Rolls-Royce is one of the most enduring and iconic brands in the world and has been at the forefront of innovation for over a century.  We design, build and service systems that provide critical power to customers where safety and reliability are paramount.

We are proud to be a force for progress, powering, protecting and connecting people everywhere.

We want to ensure that the excellence and ingenuity that has shaped our history continues into our future and we need people like you to come and join us on this journey.

We’ll provide an environment of caring and belonging where you can be yourself.  An inclusive, innovative culture that invests in you, gives you access to an incredible breadth and depth of opportunities where you can grow your career and make a difference.

What we offer:

We offer excellent development opportunities, a competitive salary, and exceptional benefits.  These include bonus, employee support assistance and employee discounts.

Your needs are as unique as you are.  Hybrid working is a way in which our people can balance their time between the office, home, or another remote location.  It’s a locally managed and flexed informal discretionary arrangement.  As a minimum we’re all expected to attend the workplace for collaboration and other specific reasons, on average three days per week.

What you will be doing:

  • Ensuring that facility designs are safe and conform to relevant legislation.
  • Providing C&I support for the entirety of the design lifecycle for new bespoke factory systems, facilities, process plant and machines to achieve an integrated engineering solution.
  • Acting as an intelligent customer for C&I matters arising in the supply chain and with our design partners.  Ensuring that their proposals satisfy design intent and comply with relevant regulations, safety standard and legislation.
  • Support facilitating commonality of C&I artifacts, principles and standards across the entire project.
  • Authoring of technical reports to a professional standard.
  • Extraction, creation and maintenance of technical requirements and associated verification & validation activities for C&I equipment.
  • Ensuring that the C&I solutions optimally meet all project and technical, including safety, requirements.
  • Working with the project management team to ensure that schedules, risks, costs and resource requirements are understood and maintained.

What we are looking for:

At Rolls-Royce we embrace agility, are bold, pursue collaboration and seek simplicity in everything we do.  These principles form our values and behaviours and are an essential component of our assessment process and are fundamental qualities that we seek for all roles.  Some specific attributes for the role are:

  • Be a professionally qualified engineer at degree level (or equivalent experience) in Electrical, Electronic, Controls or C&I Systems Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Be a Chartered Engineer or hold an affiliate/associate membership of a relevant professional body or be working towards Chartered/Incorporated status.
  • Be experienced in designing bespoke safety critical products and systems.
  • Have awareness of safety critical development constraints and relevant safety standards (e.g. IEC 60880, IEC 61508, etc).
  • Have a good understanding of the design lifecycle from initial scoping through to delivery.
  • The ability to produce clear, concise and accurate technical reports.
  • An appreciation of control system network architecture on large factory systems.
  • Have experience of designing the C&I aspects of process plants and/or factory equipment.
  • Have experience of design within the nuclear, oil & gas, pharmaceutical or chemical processing industries.

The above attributes are desirable and it is recognised that it is unlikely to find a candidate that satisfies all of them.  To that effect, if a candidate satisfies some but not all of the above, they should still apply.

We are an equal opportunities employer.  We’re committed to developing a diverse workforce and an inclusive working environment.  We believe that people from different backgrounds and cultures give us different perspectives which are crucial to innovation and problem solving.  We believe the more diverse perspectives we have, the more successful we’ll be.  By building a culture of caring and belonging, we give everyone who works at Rolls-Royce the opportunity to realise their full potential.
